This was my first Bible as a teenager in the 1970's. It's still a good translation
if you want an accurate paraphrase. The New Jerusalem Bible, Reader's Edition (1990 version)(The Complete Text of the Ancient Canon of the Scriptures) (Paperback) Henry Wansbrough (Editor) Amazon.com Review: In 1956, scholars from L'Ecole Biblique in Jerusalem set their minds to translating the Scriptures from the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts, hoping they could preserve the most sacred Christian traditions and stories. By 1966, the first English-language Jerusalem Bible was published. Since then it has become a favored text for lay readers and scholars alike. The accessible language and richly recounted stories, poetry, and letters in this edition is consistent with previous versions. However, this latest version stands out because of its clear format--clean double columns with easy-to-read type and quick reference headings. From Library Journal: Catholic readers have made The Jerusalem Bible (1966) a perennially popular study Bible. The Jerusalem-based French scholars, upon whose translation the work is based, published a revised French edition in 1973, incorporating recent research. General editor Wansbrough and his colleagues base The New Jerusalem Bible on this revision, though they have depended less on the French version and more on the original languages than did the English translators. They have thoroughly revised everything. The biblical text is loftier, more literal, and less colloquial. It is also less gender-specific, when this approach does not do violence to the original. A worthwhile purchase wherever the earlier edition is popular. Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc. Book of Mormon - Doubleday editionFor the 13 million members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints worldwide (six million in the United States), The Book of Mormon is literally the word of God, a companion volume to the Bible that contains the everlasting gospel. With the faith now of one of the fastest-growing religions in the country, Doubleday is proud to publish this first official trade edition of The Book of Mormon by special arrangement with the Church. According to Mormon belief, The Book of Mormon was inscribed on golden plates by generations of prophets, quoted and abridged by the prophet-historian Mormon, and buried in the ground by Mormon's son, Moroni. Fourteen centuries later, in 1823, the angel Moroni led Joseph Smith to the plates hidden in a hillside in upstate New York. Smith translated the ancient language into English through divine revelation. The Book of Mormon narrates the historical, religious, political, and military events that shaped and continue to inform the Church's teachings. The publication of this edition offers the opportunity to explore one of the largest denominations in America today.
